Russian Forces Kidnapped the Mayors of Two Ukrainian Cities

Russian forces kidnapped Yevheniy Matvieyev, the mayor of the city of Dniprodrudne. The news was spread by the Ukrainian authorities such as Dmytro Kuleba, Ukrainian Minister of Foreign affairs.

The kidnap happened after Russian army had kidnapped Ivan Federov – the mayor of Melitopol, on Friday. EU top diplomat Josep Borrell criticized the kidnappings as "another attack on democratic institutions in Ukraine." He accused Russia of attempting to establish "illegitimate government structures" in Ukraine.

Pope Francis also condemns Russia's actions. He has called for an end to the "massacre" in Ukraine, condemning Russia's "unacceptable armed attack" on its neighbor.

Francis decried the "barbarity" of killing children and civilians. He said Ukrainian cities risked "being reduced to cemeteries.".

People in another Ukrainian city, almost taken by the Russian - Mariupol are said to be enduring freezing temperatures with no power, and little food and water, as Russian troops make gains in taking the city.
