Former prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has intensified his criticism of the country's powerful military, accusing the head of the army of having a "personal grudge" against him and ordering his arrest and a crackdown on his party. Speaking to The Guardian at his home in Lahore, Khan stated that the military's actions against him were personal and had nothing to do with national interest.
Khan's comments come after a dramatic week in which he was arrested at Islamabad's high court by nearly 100 paramilitary officers and held in police custody in connection with a land corruption case. He believes that the military is behind his arrest and that Pakistan is now being run by the army chief.
The escalation of tensions between Khan and the military is likely to raise concerns about the state of democracy in Pakistan. The military has a long history of interfering in politics in the country and has directly ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 74-year history.
